37 Days Away
Looking ahead and I'm just 37 days away from my 1st NPC bikini competition!!! Ekkk. So very exciting to see the 'finish line' just around the corner. However, the finish line is only but a starting line! The starting line to the next competition, to the next goal, to the future and a healthier me. Many things learned this far and many milestones already met. Can't wait for the new lessons, experiences and for what's to come.
5 Major Lessons I Have Learned
There are a few things that I should mention about my journey and what I have learned thus far... 1) Fitness isn't a hobby! It is a way of life. You can't be fit part of the time. It will become like a drug and you will want to push yourself more and more. 2) Look at your workout for the day and give it ALL you have. That's it. Each day, each workout. The goal is to push yourself until you have no more and then give it one more rep. The goal is to challenge yourself and become the best version of YOU! Don't look for instant results. Just leave it all on the floor knowing you couldn't give it anything else. You never know how much your determination is inspiring someone else to push harder. 3) Don't compare yourself to anyone else, their goals, their progress and/or their journey. They are not your competition. YOU are your competition. You are competing against the old you. 4) Have a game plan ready when you walk in the gym! I was always one to go to the gym and just 'workout', but never on a concentrated area or muscle group. I starting training during the winter using BodyBuilding.com workouts and they helped me start to understand the value of being prepared. After I decided to compete in the bikini division of the NPC and joined Team Edge, I now more than ever feel lost when I go to the gym without my plan. I can still get in a good workout but when I do this I always leave the gym and think to myself I could have given more or gone harder or that I spent more time deciding what workout to do or machine to use instead of actually doing the workout. Make sure you go in ready and leave knowing you Having no plan allows you to wrap up your workout when you're a little tired instead of pushing yourself to finish a great workout. DON'T do this! Go in a leave when your plan tells you to and you have completed the full workout! With my plan in hand I can look back on the last time I performed that exercise and see where I was and see if I can make an improvement. My advice, to you is to sit down each week and plan out your training week just as you do your meal prep for the week. 5) Nutrition is MUCH more important than you think! You can work so very hard at the gym and you will make gains but you will ultimately be spinning your wheels. Think about it, why would you push myself harder and harder each time you went into the gym just to take two steps back when you eat fast food for dinner. Make conscious decisions to eat healthy and plan ahead. An app I love to use is the Paprika. I add my recipes to this app and then I am able to create my grocery list right in the app. It sorts my groceries by area, which helps me not to wander in the store and be tempted by bad foods. Once I'm done here it's home to prep for the week! Prepping each week will help you to stay on target. If you do this, you'll have no choice but to become the best you that you can be!
Don't be Afraid to Fail
Don't look at your goal as a pass or fail. Don't be afraid to fail...Failure, on some level, is inevitable. You WILL fail but what makes you strong is how you handle that failure. One of my favorite quotes is by J.K. Rowling as it hits close to home for me.
It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all - in which case, you fail by default.
This quote hits home for me as I am one of those people who doesn't like to do something I am not good as good at but too often this has led me to be a sore sport or miss out on an experience.
